A teenager once asked, "Is anime a sin? 'Cause I'm attempting to love God more. I understand war is a sin, but let's say you are going for that good guys. Or what if it's just a regular anime?"
Here's my point. Literally, watching anime isn't a sin. Yeah, right. Actually, I'm writing a magazine about it wherein I discuss the matter specifically. Watching anime is just like you're watching an indie film, or Discovery Channel, wherein you acquire some information and also at the same time you are being entertained. If I will directly answer the question "Is watching anime a sin?" then your answer is no. However, there are many things to consider with regards to anime. There are many "but's" relating to this matter. In a more literal sense, anime itself is not a sin but the way you handle your emotion while watching anime is another thing. That is one of the many cases. Since there are many.
People, especially teenagers, who're hooked up with Japanese animation consider this merely as a type of entertainment. I don't argue about this anyway, becasue it is the fact. However, everyone must take into account that if watching anime replaces the position and peace and quiet with God, then you're totally guilty in the eyes of the LORD. Watching anime turns into a sin when you spend some time onto it a lot more than you spend time with God. Uh-oh. I'd rather not appear to be a preacher here, but, I have to include a verse that supports my claim.
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you might be careful to complete according to all that is written in it. For then you'll go prosperous, and you will have good results. (Joshua 1:8 ESV)
It is God's command that people should meditate on His word. Not just that, it says day and night. When we read the scriptures we will know the principles of God and also the stuff that pleases Him, including the stuff that displeases Him. God isn't pleased when His children are so busy doing other things for selfish reasons, when in fact He should be prioritized above other things.
In this case, if you are watching anime and spending more time on it, then let me inquire a question: are you currently spending a basic time with God? Are you able to compare your prayer time from how long you're watching anime stuffs?
If you want to love God more then you should be more concern of how to grow your relationship with the Father. We ought to not try to like God. But we ought to love God with all our heart, with all our mind, with all our soul. That's the greatest commandment from the LORD!
I was once an anime lover before, and honestly, I cosplayed, too. And this is an impression of a former cosplayer who abandoned the animeland in the quest for following Christ...
If watching anime is your priority in life, if you spend more time on it than other things, then I tell you for several, it is indeed a sin. And you are accountable from it within the Judgment Day.
